Job Hunting Tricks, Not Treats: Navigating the Scariest Interview Questions

Navigating challenging interview questions can be difficult. You might be unsure why the interviewer is asking a question and what they are looking for in your answer.

Fortunately, you can take steps to prepare for difficult interview questions and leave a positive impression on employers. These methods can help.

Use these job-hunting tricks to navigate the scariest interview questions.

Research the Company

Learn all you can about the organization you are interviewing with. You can use your findings to tailor your answers to the interviewer’s expectations to demonstrate your fit with the job:

  • Visit the company website and social media pages to learn about the organization’s mission, vision, and values and how they are carried out.
  • Focus on employee photos, videos, stories, and experiences at company events.
  • Visit employer review sites to see what employees have to say about working for the organization.
  • Conduct an online search to learn about the latest company news and developments.

Know Your Resume

Review your resume before an interview. Ensure you can explain every detail in it.

Because your resume makes a first impression on the interviewer, they likely will ask questions about the information you shared. Examples include a project you worked on, a problem you solved, or a skill you developed.

Include with each of your answers a specific example and a story that demonstrates an accomplishment, challenge, and learning opportunity. Follow the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) to develop your answers and demonstrate your impact.

Practice Answering Interview Questions

Search online for common and unique interview questions relevant to the company and job. Then, practice answering these questions.

  • Focus on the job duties, responsibilities, skills, experience, and other requirements for the role.
  • Find relevant interview questions that involve goals, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, successes, failures, and behavioral scenarios.
  • Include with each answer details from your resume along with examples, stories, and quantifiable achievements to demonstrate your ability to perform the work.
